 The Cardfiler lets you create an electronic box of
 index cards. This electronic file box is called a card
 file.

 Card files contain cards, which can hold any kind of
 information you like, such as names, addresses, and
 telephone numbers. By organizing the cards in card
 files, you can keep groups of cards separate from other
 groups of cards.

 The Cardfiler uses two windows, the Cardfiler index
 window and the card window. The Cardfiler window lists,
 in alphabetical order, the topic of each card in the
 file. The card window displays the topic and text of a
 single card. It may also include images.

 For information about using the Cardfiler, double click
 on an item from the list of additional topics below.

    MB1 to pull down this menu.

 4. Move the pointer to the Overview menu item and
    release MB1 to display information about using

 To add a card to a card file:

 1. Choose Create Card... from the Card menu in the
    Cardfiler window or from the Card menu in the card
    window. A dialog box appears.

 2. Type the topic for the card. Click on the OK
    button. A card window containing the topic you typed
    appears.

 3. Type the text on the card. You can type up to 400
    characters in each card.

    When you are finished typing the text you can create
    a new card, display a card, or close the current
    card. Choose Create Card... from the Card menu
    to create a new card, click on a card's topic to
    display a card, or choose Close from the File menu
    to close the current card.

 There are four ways to display an existing card:

 -  Move the pointer to the card's topic in the
    Cardfiler window and click MB1.

 -  Move the pointer to the Card window. Click on the
    Next button to display the next card in the card
    file. Click on the Previous button to display the
    previous card in the card file.

 -  Use Search Index... and Find Next from the Search
    menu in the Cardfiler window to display cards that
    contain a common text string in the topic.

 -  Use Search Card... and Find Next from the Search
    menu in the Cardfiler window to display cards that
    contain a common text string in the text of the
    card.

 Rename a card by changing the topic of the card.

 1. Display the card you want to rename.

 2. Choose Rename... from the Card menu in the card
    window. A dialog box appears, containing the old
    topic of the card.

 3. Move the pointer to the old topic and click MB1.

 Cardfiler allows you to move text and images to other
 locations. To select text, click MB1 and drag the
 pointer across the text. To select an image, click MB1
 anywhere within the image. The image becomes reverse in
 color to indicate that it is selected.

 After you have selected the text or image, do the
 following:

 1. Choose Cut from the Edit menu. The item disappears
    from the card.

    If you are moving text or an image to another index
    card, move the pointer to the Cardfiler window.
    Click on the topic of the card to which you want to
    move the item.

    If you are moving an item to another application
    window, move the pointer to the window.

 2. For text, move the pointer to the location where you
    want to insert the item and click MB1.

 3. Choose Paste from the Edit menu. The item appears in
    the correct part of the card.

 If the paste buffer (or "clipboard") contains text, the
 text is inserted at the current cursor position.

 If the clipboard contains a DDIF image, the image
 portion of the card is replaced.

 If the clipboard does not contain text or an image, an
 error message is displayed.

 Cardfiler allows you to copy text and images to other
 locations. You can copy text or images by choosing the
 Edit menu Copy option or you can copy text and images
 within a card using the mouse and the DECwindows text
 widget.

 You can quickly copy text or images from one place to
 another in the same card by using the mouse and the
 DECwindows text widget. To copy items in a card:

    If you want to select a portion of the text, move

    window. A dialog box appears.

 4. The Cardfiler combines the cards from both card
    files, sorts them alphabetically, and places them

 The File menu allows you to manipulate individual index
 cards. It contains the following menu items:

 Choose Print to print the current card, using the
 characteristics you set by choosing Print...

 Note, however, you cannot print Cardfiler images.

 Choose Print... to set print characteristics. The
 Cardfiler Printing dialog box appears.

 You can change any field in this dialog box to
 designate the number of copies, print range, print
 format, printer, orientation, and print after time.

 Click on Options... to display the Print Options dialog
 box. You can change any of the print options in this
 dialog box.

 Choose Include Image... to place an image on an index
 card. A dialog box appears.

 1. Click on the name of the DIGITAL Document
    Interchange Format (DDIF) file that contains the
    image you want included on the card.

    You can create DDIF files using the VMS DECwindows
    Paint program. Cardfiler allows you to include
    images up to 64K bytes.

 2. The image appears on the card.

 The Edit menu allows you to edit individual cards. It
 contains the following menu items:

 -  Undo

 -  Copy

 -  Cut

 -  Paste

 Choose Undo to cancel the most recently performed
 editing command. The editing commands you can cancel
 are cut, paste, clear, and undo.

 Use Copy to copy text or images from one location in a
 card to another, from one index card to another, or to
 another application window.

 To select text, click MB1 and drag the pointer across
 the text. To select an image, click MB1 anywhere
 within the image. The image becomes reverse in color
 to indicate that it is selected.

 1. Choose Copy from the Edit menu.

    If you are copying an item to another index card,
    move the pointer to the Cardfiler window. Click on
    the topic of the card to which you want to copy.

    If you are copying to another application window,
    move the pointer to the window.

 2. For text, move the pointer to the location where you
    want to insert the item and click MB1.

 3. Choose Paste from the Edit menu. The item appears on
    the card.

 Choose Cut to move text or images from one location in

 3. Choose Paste from the Edit menu. The item appears on

 Choose Paste to insert text or images at the current
 cursor location.

 If the paste buffer (or "clipboard") contains text, the
 text is inserted at the current cursor position.

 If the clipboard contains a DDIF image, the image
 portion of the card is replaced.

 If the clipboard does not contain text or an image, an
 error message is displayed.

 To use the Paste menu item, first select the item by
 choosing either the Copy Text or Cut Text menu item.
 You can paste text or an image that was cut or copied
 from any of the following:

 -  The current card

 -  Another index card

 -  Another application window

 Choose Clear to clear the selected object (either text
 or an image).

 The Search menu allows you to search a card file for a
 text string. It contains the following menu items:

 Choose Search Index... to search all topics in a card
 file for any text string. A text string is a group of
 characters, including spaces, that you can type at the
 keyboard. For example, you might want to locate all
 topics containing the text string "Smith".

 1. Type the text string in the Go To dialog box.

 2. Click on the OK button.

 3. Cardfiler displays the first card in the file with a
    topic that contains the text string.

 4. A dialog box containing the message "String not
    found" is displayed if no card in the file contains
    the text string. Click on the Acknowledged button.

 Choose Find Next from the Search menu in the Card
 window to display the next card in the file with a
 topic that contains the same text string.

Choose Search Card... to search all cards in a card
file for a text string. A text string is a group of
characters, including spaces, that you can type at the
keyboard. For example, you might want to locate all
topics containing the text string "locksmith".

 1. Type the text string in the Find dialog box.

 2. Click on the OK button.

 3. Cardfiler displays the first card in the file that
    contains the text string. A dialog box containing
    the message "String not found" is displayed if no
    card in the file contains the text string. Click on
    the Acknowledged button.

 Choose Find Next from the Search menu in the Cardfiler
 window to display the next card in the file that
 contains the same text string.

 After choosing Search Index..., choose Find Next to
 display the next card with a topic containing the text
 string.

 After choosing Search Card..., choose Find Next to
 find the next card in the file that contains the text

 The card menu allows you to perform operations on index
 cards. It contains the following menu items:

 Choose Create Card... to add a card to a card file. A
 dialog box appears.

 1. Type the topic for the card. Click on the OK
    button. A card window containing the topic you typed
    appears.

 2. Type the text on the card. You can type up to 4000
    characters in each card.

    When you are finished typing the text you can create
    a new card, display a card, or close the current
    card. Choose Create Card... from the Card menu
    to create a new card, click on a card's topic to
    display a card, or choose Close from the File menu
    to close the current card.

 Choose Duplicate to create a copy of the card that is
 currently open.

 This is useful when you want to create another card
 that contains some of the same information as the
 current card. Edit the duplicate card to add the new
 information, and rename the card.

 Use Rename... to change the topic of an index card, as
 follows:

 1. Display the card you want to rename.

 2. Choose the Rename... menu item. A dialog box
    appears, containing the old topic of the card.

 3. Move the pointer to the old topic. The topic is
    highlighted. Type the new topic. The old topic
    disappears when you begin typing the new topic.

 4. When you finish typing the new topic, click on the
    OK button.

 Choose Delete to delete an index card.

 1. Display the card you want to delete.

 2. Choose Delete. The card window disappears from the
    screen and the topic disappears from the Cardfiler
    window.

 Choose Undelete to restore the most recently deleted
 card.

 automatically repeat the Next function.

 display the previous card in the card file.

 You can press and hold MB1 on the Previous button to
 automatically repeat the Previous function.

 When the current card is the first card in the
 cardfile, the Cardfiler displays the last card.

 Choose Restore to eliminate any edits you have made to
 the card since you opened the card file.

 The Help menu allows you to display help for the
 Cardfiler. It contains two menu items, Overview and
 About.

 Choose Overview to display an overview of the Cardfiler
 and to access additional help for the Cardfiler.

 Choose About to display copyright information for the
 Cardfiler.
